Recently, it was my privilege to have a phone interview with the lady who started it all:  ScareLA Founder Lora Ivanova.

ScareLA Founder Lora Ivanova

I was immediately impressed with her passion for her unique craft:  Bringing together the artist, craftsmen, and fans of all things Haunt into a creative weekend of fun and learning.  I had a set of prepared questions for her, and her answers were enlightening to say the least.  The more I learn about the world of Haunters, the more fascinating it is.

Coaster Chit Chat:  What was your inspiration for ScareLA, why do you love Haunts and Halloween?

Lora spoke with passion about how there is so much more to Halloween than dressing up.  It is an elaborate art, that appeals to our most primal emotions.  She wanted to create an opportunity to bring together the community, and to inspire audiences to appreciate the work.  In 2011 Laura had the opportunity to work with Neil Patrick Harris in an immersive interaction.  She spoke of how warm and creative the people were.  She wanted to create ScareLA to bring together people in a shared experience, to make it easier for the artist and craftsmen to promote their work.

Coaster Chit Chat:  What is it you hope attendees take from attending?

Lora:  Lora has hopes that attendees will:

1.)  Have a blast at this amazing event.

2.)  Learn something new about their self.

3.)  Know a new skill, be excited to do more, inspire the next generation.

There are many classes, presenters, and appearances planned for this event.  The website has a complete list of classes, many of which are free.  Appearances planned include Mary Rangel, Director of the Metamorphosis Experiment, Jon Autopsy of Knott’s Scary Farm and Winchester House, and Emma Bell, Director, Scratch and actress in The Walking Dead and AMC.

Emma Bell: Scratch, AMC, The Walking Dead

Jon Autopsy: Knott’s Scary Farm, Winchester House

Coaster Chit Chat:  ScareLA started in 2013 and is continuously growing.  What are your plans for future development.

Lora is very excited about the move back to LA, and to the LA Convention Center.  It is the biggest venue available, allowing a more immersive nature to the event, and increase in interactive activities.  They have been able to get rid of the break away rooms for the classes, you will be able to see all from the showroom.  This will allow folks much more flexibility in checking things out. There will be interactive game play, bigger haunted houses, a better quality, bigger experience.  There will be two sides to the showroom.  One side, the Day of Halloween, will be devoted to prep classes, vendors, meeting celebrities, makeup and costume.  The other side, the Night of Halloween Scarywood, will have a full cast to interact with trick or treaters.

Coaster Chit Chat:  I asked Lora what she saw as being the possibilities of VR in the future of horror.

Lora:  She spoke of VR becoming its own genre, a shift to more VR but not replacing real life experiences.  Some things can only be experienced in person, but VR can make experiences more accessible.

Decayed Brigade Sliders: A Crowd Pleaser!

Coaster Chit Chat:  I asked Lora what her thoughts were on social issues, their effect on Haunts and creativity.  I specifically mentioned what happened at Knott’s Scary Farm and California’s Great America with the FearVR experiences being closed down.

Lora:  Lora stated that she supported Knott’s but that we do need to be respectful.

Lora spoke with passion in regard to Haunts providing a safe environment to address issues and to understand each other in a creative space.  She expressed a high regard for the ability to create being very important.  Lora wants ScareLA to create excitement.  ScareLA is put on by the community and for the community.  Volunteers are needed.  Information can be found on the website about volunteer work.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND SCARELA

“The inspiration for ScareLA came during post-Halloween depression (yes, I love Halloween so much I get the blues when it’s over) 🙁 It seemed unfair to have to wait for an entire year to celebrate again. After launching the hit horror experience “Delusion” alongside Jon Braver and Neil Patrick Harris and working with Leonard Pickel, the “Godfather of Haunting,” on HAuNTcon, the longest running haunter’s convention, I wanted to create a place where the entire scare-loving community can come together – from fans to famous. By kicking off Halloween early in the summer, ScareLA extends the spooky season for scare enthusiasts of all ages in SoCal and beyond. See you there!”
