HangTime Opens at the Farm………Surfing USA Just Got a Whole New Meaning!
Knott’s Berry Farm recently opened their awesome new Gerstlauer Coaster, HangTime. This unique, only “dive” coaster in California, brings a whole new dimension to the Boardwalk area of the park. It has crisp, clean lines and attractive theming. The ride is highly visible both day and night, with the cool led lighting package giving the ride a shirmmering look in the crisp evening air, as the chasing lights follow the coaster’s graceful dips and curves.
In typical Knott’s fashion, the opening party was a splendid celebration. It was a great opportunity to visit with friends in the coaster community, as well as experience and share all that is new for the Farm this season. The entire Boardwalk area was open for this event, and festively decorated. And, Snoopy greeted us at the entry to the Charles Schultz Theatre.
So many improvements have been made on the Boardwalk. Of course, the new restaurant opened last year, and the new benches and lights were installed. Recently shade was added to the benches, and new photo op spots where added. There is something else being added to the left of HangTime, but at this time it is only speculation as to what it is!
We all enjoyed rides on all the old favorites, including Coast Rider, Supreme Scream, and Xcellerator, and feasted on old favorites at the Boardwalk BBQ, Boysenberry Meatballs, and got our first taste of the new HangTime Milk Shake, (served at Coasters), while we waited for the main event, the grand opening of HangTime.
The Opening Moment for HangTime was a splendid show, introducing us to a new persona for our favorite beagle, Beach Blanket Beagle. Two new shows are planned for this summer, beginning June 9th.
That was all great, and it was fun to watch the singers, band, and dancers. We all enjoyed hearing about the plans for summer from the park president. But what we came for was HangTime, and at last, the fireworks and light show began. I went on FaceBook live to share the moment, so I did not get the opening ceremony to share here. I do have some shots of the awesome lights shortly after the ceremony.
At last it was time to ride. There were several hundred people in line, so I did not get on right away. Captured on video, here is my very first experience. So many thanks to my teammate Brian DeBoard for adding the opening, closing, and editing out the embarrassing moment at the end.
As I said, I had not ridden this coaster before my POV time, and I had no clue what to expect. The completely vertical lift hill was a unique experience for me, and as you can see, I was a bit nervous about it. The hang at the top is awesome, you can see not only the entire track, but Xcellerator and beyond the park, I think all the way to Interstate 5. It is just long enough to focus and enjoy the view, (12 seconds) before the brakes ease up, there is a creep forward, and then the release plummets you towards the earth. Once the coaster drops, (96 degrees) the fun really begins. HangTime provides a breathtaking series of inversions, twist, and airtime moments that are sure to please all coaster lovers, and leave you gasping for more.
The next day, I spent some more time at the Farm, and here are some daytime views of this majestic beauty.
So there it is…………the new coaster we have all been waiting for about a year now. It was sad to say good bye to Boomerang last April, but so much fun to say hello to HangTime just 13 months later. This coaster, along with the other improvements on the Boardwalk, have revitalized this area of the park, and will make it as popular as GhostTown I am sure. Get out to the Farm and check it out soon.
